FedEx Linehaul teams comprise specialized, over-the-road (OTR) commercial drivers who operate Class A tractor-trailers to transport high-volume freight between regional hubs and terminals. Unlike local P&D (Pick-Up and Delivery) drivers, linehaul teams focus exclusively on the heavy-duty transit of goods across the national network, typically during overnight windows to meet strict next-day delivery commitments.
Core Characteristics
- High-Volume Logistics: Teams operate 18-wheelers on fixed or variable routes, often spanning hundreds to thousands of miles per shift.
- Operational Schedule: Work is primarily nocturnal and runs seven days a week. However, routes are strategically designed to ensure drivers return home within a 1–5 day window.
- Team Driving Model: To maximize "windshield time" and equipment utilization, many routes utilize two-person teams. This allows the truck to remain in constant motion, significantly increasing efficiency and earning potential.
- No-Touch Freight: Responsibilities are strictly limited to professional driving, pre-trip safety inspections, and trailer coupling/uncoupling. There is no residential delivery or manual unloading of individual packages involved.
Primary Route Types:
Dedicated Runs; Consistent, scheduled transit between specific terminals on a set timetable.; Offers predictability and routine.
Unassigned Runs; Dynamic, variable routes that fluctuate based on daily volume and network demand; Offers flexibility and variety.
